To understand them better, the Fondation Médéric Alzheimer has brought together a multi-disciplinary expert group. Aristote's five senses must be enhanced by today's knowledge of proprioception, motor cognition and pain perception. Nowadays, the main objective in treating patients with schizophrenia (SZ) is not only to attain and maintain symptomatic remission, in order to reach recovery, but also to avoid relapses and reach a level of personal and social functioning, as well as of quality of life (QoL), as near as possible to that of the general population (Hasan et al. 2013). In that sense, psychosocial functioning and QoL are increasingly recognized as important treatment outcomes in SZ (Juckel and Morosini 2008; Remington et al. 2010; Figueira and Brissos 2011).

Although the idea of action simulation is nowadays popular in cognitive science, neuroscience and robotics, many aspects of the simulative processes remain unclear from empirical, computational, and neural perspectives. In the first part of the article, we provide a critical review and assessment of action simulation theories advanced so far in the wider literature of embodied and motor cognition.
